Kindness and Creativity at Family Free Day

On Wednesday, February 5th Children’s Museum of Atlanta proudly opened our doors to 1,577 guests free of charge for the first Family Free Day of 2020. Made possible by the generous support of our sponsors PNC Bank, The Coca-Cola Foundation and CareSource, Family Free Day aims to make CMA’s exhibits, learning spaces and educational programs accessible to every child in our community. In addition to opening the Museum for exploration free of charge, we also invited a number of community partners to help us create a festival-like atmosphere celebrating innovation and creativity.

Lots of new friends in the Art Studio!

The theme of February’s Family Free Day was kindness and we were delighted to welcome a whole host of local organizations to help us spread kindness within the Museum and beyond. Open Hand Atlanta and Hands On Atlanta helped us find ways to show kindness to others in our community. Open Hand cooks and delivers nutritious meals to those living with critical illnesses, disabled folks and the homebound elderly. On Family Free Day they shared their mission with our guests and invited children and their families to make Valentine’s Day cards for their clients. These cards will be delivered with their meals and hopefully bring smiles to the faces of folks all over our city! Hands On Atlanta encourages Atlantans to #DoSomethingGood and shared with our guests the many opportunities for volunteering that they coordinate. Specials thanks to each of these organizations for helping to make Family Free Day special and reminding us to take a moment in our lives to care for others and show kindness!

These little ones took learning about our feathered friends seriously!

Atlanta Audobon Society and Trees Atlanta let us explore ways to show kindness to the plants and animals that call Atlanta home. Atlanta Audobon Society brought bird coloring pages and bird identification books to help our guests appreciate the diversity of plumage in our city. They also brought some bird plushies for tossing in a matching game! Meanwhile Tree Atlanta talked to little ones about the many trees in Atlanta and let them guess which household products are made from trees. (Toothpaste, anyone?) We appreciate these organizations for supporting Family Free Day and reminding us that we can also show kindness to our natural environment.

This little guy was proud of his work!

CareSource, Fulton County Library System, The Community Academy for Architecture and Design (TCAAD), and Mr. Greg’s Musical Madness empowered us to show kindness to ourselves by taking care of our health, expanding our minds and exercising our creativity.  Our friends at CareSource shared information with our guests about staying healthy and accessing quality healthcare. Fulton County Library System shared information about how to use our local library system. They also gave out fun bookmarks and pencils and a specially made list of children’s books about kindness! They recommended How Kind! by Mary Murphy, Horton Hears a Who! by Dr. Seuss, A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead, The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig, Kindness Is Cooler, Mrs. Ruler by Margery Cuyler, I Walk with Vanessa: A Story about a Simple Act of Kindness by Kerascoët, and Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell. TCAAD let our little ones get hands-on and creative by making extraterrestrial environments as seen through their spaceship port holes. And Mr. Greg’s Musical Madness let us all sing, dance and march to our own beat. CMA thanks each of these organizations for sharing with the community and reminding us to be kind to our body, minds and creative spirits!

CMA loves Family Free Day and last week was a wonderful experience for our team. It’s incredible to learn from our community partners and work together to provide fun, educational and memorable experiences for our guests. The next Family Free Day will be May 6th and we can hardly wait!
