TiNY Club: Tree

September’s here, and with it comes the beginning of autumn. Tuesday, September 22nd, marks the first day of fall. That means the leaves will start changing colors soon, the air will be crisp and cool, and animals will start preparing for the winter.

Our September Tiny Club book of the month is Tree by Britta Teckentrup. This book walks us through the seasons and gives us a close up look at changing weather, trees, and animals. Watch the reading together, then walk through the vocabulary words and discussion questions with your child.

Vocabulary Words:

Seasons: There are four seasons throughout the year: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each season is marked by different weather and daylight hours.

Weather: Weather is the state of the atmosphere. This includes how cold or hot it is, how rainy or dry, or how clear or cloudy the sky is. Weather changes depending on the season – especially the temperature!

Bower: A pleasant, shady place underneath a tree.

Sway: To move slowly from side to side.

Tumble: To fall suddenly.

Discussion Questions:

What happened to the tree in the story? What did it look like in the winter? What about in the spring and summer? What happened to it in the fall?

What are some other ways we could tell what season it was from the pictures?

What do animals do in the winter? What do they do in the summer? Talk about how some animals gather food in the fall and hibernate in the winter.

Have you ever seen squirrels getting ready for fall by gathering and hiding acorns?

What’s your favorite season? Why?

We’ll be back next Monday for a leaf chromatography activity! Have a great week!
