TiNY CLUB: Supporting Others

Welcome back to Tiny Club! We have another activity for you today themed around our book of the month: I Am Enough by Grace Byers. In the book, we see children supporting, encouraging, and helping each other. Today, we’re going to learn a few ways that you can support, encourage, and help your community.

We’re partnering with Open Hand Atlanta to share one of their volunteer opportunities. Open Hand Atlanta is an organization that serves the community by empowering people to live healthier, more productive lives. They prepare, pack, and deliver over 5,000 healthy meals a day throughout metro Atlanta! One of our favorite things about this volunteer opportunity is that children can participate too – just make sure to let Open Hand Atlanta know that children will be joining.

Meal Delivery for Open Hand Atlanta

Description: Volunteers help deliver meals to Open Hand clients living throughout metro Atlanta. Routes average approximately 1 to 3 hours with 7-10 clients. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license, car insurance, and use their own vehicles.

Delivery Volunteer Protocol: Hands On Atlanta is using a “Drop, Wait, and Wave” no contact delivery process where volunteers drop the client meals off on doorsteps, wait six feet back from the door, and wave goodbye once the meals have been received. All volunteers are required to wear masks and are also provided gloves to use when handling client meal boxes. Age Range: Drivers must be 21 years old, but there are no age restrictions on those riding along.

Shift Days: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. First-time drivers need to watch this delivery training video to cut downtime on campus. Similar to a carpool line, delivery routes are brought out to volunteers’ cars.

Route Size/Expectations: Each client receives one week’s worth of food at a time, so you will need to have room in your trunk and backseat for large cardboard boxes.

Average Route Time: 1-3 hours
You can view Open Hand Atlanta’s full volunteer calendar here to learn more about their other volunteer opportunities. You may also remember the last time CMA partnered with Open Hand Atlanta – we made beautiful Valentine’s Day cards for the community. That leads us to our next way to support, encourage, and help our community: letters!

Materials
Paper
Pens, markers, or pencils
Any other craft supplies you’d like to use

Think about someone you love that you haven’t been able to see in a while. Maybe it’s a friend, maybe it’s a family member. Use your materials to write or draw a letter to them. You could tell them how much you miss and love them, or draw a picture of the two of you together. Send it to them and brighten their day!

We’ll be back next week with our August Tiny Club book of the month. We’ll be reading The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld.
