Celebrate Hanukkah: A Cultural Exploration

Celebrate Hanukkah with Rabbi Glusman from the MJCCA at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta! Dance and sing along to classic Hanukkah songs, learn from Hanukkah stories that tell the tales of the Maccabees’ bravery and the miracle of the Hanukkah lights, and unravel the traditions of eating chocolate coins and latkes!
Special Winter Holiday Storytime with Music and Movement –1:00 PM & 2:00 PM
Every day, the CMA Imaginators will share the traditions and tales of Las Posadas, Hanukkah, Christmas or Kwanza through an interactive Readers’ Theatre performance. Gather around the CMA stage to hear a special book reading, then get ready to dance and sing to your favorite Las Posadas, Hanukkah, Christmas, or Kwanzaa holiday songs! Featured books include The Night of Las Posadas by Tommie DePaola, Hanukkah Lights by David Martin, Silver Packages by Cynthia Rylan, and My First Kwanzaa Book by Deborah M. Newton.
Eat A Georgia Rainbow – 3:00 PM
Join the Imaginators for this seasonal program that features fruits and vegetables that can be harvested in Georgia throughout the year. Visitors will participate in a scavenger hunt and a holiday-themed cold cooking activity.
Super Spectacular Science Show…on ice! – 4:00 PM
Every afternoon, you can find Professor Labcoat at the CMA Ice Skating Rink! While attempting the perfect axel and toe-loop, Professor Labcoat will teach future gold-medalists all about the forces, angles, and science behind skating! After the performance, join her rink-side for even more dazzling winter science surprises!
Science Bar – open 11:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Throughout December, meet Professor Labcoat at the Science Bar for a winter wonderland of scientific fun! Explore weather instruments to predict if Atlanta will have a white Christmas, learn about the energy needed to power a circuit of holiday lights, and breathe in the aromas of the holidays while you discover exactly how your body’s olfactory system works!
Art Studio – open 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
The projects in the Art Studio connect and are inspired by the traveling exhibits in the museum as well as cultural holidays. Children discover colors and explore artists from around the world. In celebration of Las Posadas, Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa, young artists can choose among holiday crafts unique to each holiday, or decorate their own wrapping paper to package a holiday gift for a special friend or family member!
Build It Lab – open 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
The holiday season is all about giving. In December, CMA’s Build It Lab will be transformed into a holiday toy workshop where you can design a special toy that you can give to a friend or loved one. Projects will include creating a toy helicopter, car, and ball catcher! Children will enjoy this supervised space where they have access to real tools and materials needed to spark creativity, nurture curious minds, and ignite the next wave of innovators. Woodworking and other popular maker skills encourage visitors to be curious, creative and innovative.
